Sat 27th May Astley & Tyldesley Festival Astley & Tyldesley

Astley & Tyldesley staged the 15th annual Festival meeting, sponsored by Archie Wilkinson Cycle Speedway Equipment, at Gin Pit on Saturday. The circuit was in immaculate condition and provided plenty of great racing throughout the day. The A & T club provided their usual slick promotion, with entertainment provided by the Red Hot Flames Cheerleaders. The top four riders in each category received trophies, along with prize vouchers in excess of £200 provided by the sponsors, and presented by the Mayor of Wigan, Councillor Eunice Smethurst.

Stockport's Jack Lush headed the qualifiers for the Novices Final, racing unbeaten in the qualifiers. He led the final from start to finish, holding off a strong challenge from twin brother Matthew, who fell, and trailed in fourth. A & T's Laura Allen came through to take 2nd place, with Bury's Liam Burke taking 3rd place.

A most competitive field assembled for the Senior event. Stockport's Terry Norman was the early pace setter, starting off with three wins, with Wednesfield's Garry Pearce and Sheffield's Radek Sieradzki in hot pursuit. Last year's winner, Bury's Remi Burchardt, recorded the three fastest times of the day, but lost his chance when excluded for crossing the inside in heat 6. Pearce's chances went with a gate exclusion in heat 15. The following race saw a nasty incident, in which Stockport's Chris Eaton was match banned for malicious foul riding, after turning right on Coventry's Przemek Binkowski and forcing him into the fence on the back straight. The Pole required extensive treatment to a leg injury before competing in the re-run, and then withdrawing from the meeting due to injury. In the re-run, A & T's Tomasz Szwajorek put himself in contention for a place, by beating Norman.

However, Norman was still leading the field after heat 16, and he secured his record seventh A & T Festival main event victory with a win in heat 17. Late wins to Sheffield's Pawel Kozlowski saw him force a run-off for third place with teammate Sieradzki, whilst Szwajorek won his fourth race in heat 20 to finish overall runner-up. In the run-off for third place, Sieradzki won the toss for start positions, and headed home Kozlowski.

British Champion Terry Norman continued his amazing run of successes at the Gin Pit circuit, and also made it a clean sweep of successes for the Stockport club in this 15th annual A & T Festival.
