Sun 12th June Astley & Tyldesley v Norwich Astley & Tyldesley

Astley & Tyldesley Miners' Welfare Cycle Speedway took on Norwich in a British Team Championship 2nd Round match at Gin Pit on Sunday. A & T's hopes of progressing to the Quarter Finals were dealt a blow with the late absences of both Jeff Radcliffe (return flight from holiday delayed by 5 hours) and Warren Mee (late arrival from previous night's speedway match at Cardiff). Former captain George Hughes was drafted in for his first match for several seasons, along with Mark Keirl.

A & T held Norwich for the first three races before the visitors went ahead with a 7-3 heat win. Two more 6-4s and a 7-3 win put Norwich firmly in the driving seat, leading at the interval by 11 points. The second half saw A & T challenging hard but unable to claw back Norwich's lead, and the visitors finished off with two 7-3 heat wins to take a deserved 99-79 victory.

All eight A & T riders gave it their all, with Frank Finnigan in impressive form, riding his first match for nearly three months, before tiring late on, with Chris Finnigan and Danny Hughes always in the thick of the action. However, the sport's ruling (strongly opposed by A & T) that bans foreign riders from being used in this competition, and the two late absences meant that A & T were missing half their first choice team. For Norwich, Leigh Cossey raced unbeaten, whilst Liam Webster lost only to Chris Finnigan in heat 1. Norwich had seven competitive riders, and were obviously up for the match, arriving at Gin Pit just after noon, some having made the five hour journey from Norwich, the others the shorter journey from Cardiff.
