History, Membership and Competitions

History

The Astley & Tyldesley club was formed in November 1989. Club members raised funds and built the race track at the Astley & Tyldesley Miners’ Welfare Club, Meanley Road, Gin Pit. The track was officially opened in April 1991 by the Mayor of Wigan. The club has continued to improve the track and facilities, to make it the North’s Regional Cycle Speedway Centre and the North West's Cycle Speedway Academy from 2002.  The club has also attained "Go-Ride Status" for meeting British Cycling's criteria and "Clubmark Accreditation" for meeting Sport England's criteria for being a "Junior Friendly Club"

Affiliations

The Astley & Tyldesley club is affiliated to the British Cycling Federation, Wigan Borough Sports Council and to the Wigan & Leigh Council for Voluntary Service.  A Go-Ride and Clubmark accredited Club.    

Membership

Throughout our brief history, the club has continued to recruit as many new riders as possible, to add to our tally of having produced eleven British Champions in the club, as well as winning the 1997 British U-16 Team Championship. Races, training and competitions are organised to cater for riders of all ages and abilities, during the outdoor season which runs from March to October. Members will also be able to participate at occasional indoor events held during the winter months.

The club organises weekly club training nights, held on Tuesdays from 7 - 9 pm, from March to October. The sessions are open to all interested casual and regular riders at the Gin Pit track. Bikes and helmets are available for use by participants, with tuition provided by the club’s coaches. There is a charge of £2 per session per rider.  Prior booking is required for groups.

Bikes and helmets are available from the club for use by new riders. Club race jerseys, race trousers and race gloves are provided for all competitions. All other clothing and equipment is to be provided by the competitors themselves.

An annual fee of £25 is payable for racing members aged 18 and over. This includes membership of the Astley & Tyldesley Miners' Welfare Club. Non racing members and junior members aged under 18 have free membership of the Cycle Speedway section.

The club enters teams in various league and cup events :-

British Championships and British Junior League matches organised by the British Cycling Federation’s Cycle Speedway Commission are generally held on Saturdays.

Northern League matches are generally held on Sundays."

Manchester League, matches are usually held midweek.

Within these various bodies, matches are staged at the following

levels :-

U-8, U-10, U-13, U-16, U-19, Open, O-40, 2nd team, 1st team.

Matches can be either individual or team events. The club also organises occasional weekend trips to the Continent. Riders can even have the opportunity to compete in International events !

Riders are covered for public liability insurance, but should they require personal accident cover, then they will need to take out their own policies.
